Server Downtime / Website Downtime Explained

Jamie

It's not a every day occurrence that JR goes down. Since we started around 10 years ago our downtime has been at around 99% uptime.

That's pretty impressive and I'm proud of that number. I don't like our services going down and I strive to automate most things to make processes and services run better.

Recent Server Downtime

Last night and this morning our vaiken server was offline.

This server runs the following:

  • Just Cause Multiplayer 3
  • ARK
  • Minecraft
  • Left For Dead 2
  • Killing Floor 2
  • Starmade

Unfortunately due to it been only me that is the server tech at JR I was in bed asleep ready for work and my normal buzzer to wake me up to say server has gone down. Did not... work.

Either way, I have got the server to boot up this morning. The issue was caused by a strange issue with our network configuration. It was completely wiped. I have resolved this and the server is now online

Other server happenings i.e. Website Migrations.

I have been quietly planning a server migration for our website server which also hosts a number of games. The reason is due to the older server was running for 2 years straight and the hardware was beginning to age and we needed a different kernel and system than we were using.

The other reason is I wanted something beefier in the processor department and wanted to upgrade from traditional HDD's to SSD's. While we have downgraded our RAM for this box (64GB wasn't been used) we still have quite a lot of RAM at our disposal (32GB)

I migrated the server successfully away from the old box last saturday between 11 PM and 6 AM. GMT + 0

While a success there still is a few services that need to be sorted on the new box:

  • c3d2 (Our discord bot)
  • Killing Floor 1 (we also are only sorting out 2 servers as the demand has weakened for this server)
  • JC3MP (Technically the first node. We had it working but it gave a fault after updating the kernel. We are working on figuring a solution for this)

That's it! For people are interested what our main box hosts:

  • Websites (Multiple for different clients of mine as well as JR)
  • Email services
  • TF2
  • Counter Strike Source + GO
  • Just Cause 2 Multiplayer
  • Garrys Mod
  • Rust

To end...

JR is working on a lot this year, we are moving all server controls to a single admin panel which will make server administration easier for our staff when I am not around. We are working on a better backup system, We are bringing online more exciting games and there should be a rewards system for our uses who play our servers coming soon too.

For people who have in the past doubted our survival. We are here to stay. 10 Years have past since I opened the website / forum and 7 years have past since I have opened our game servers.

Stick around and as they say, watch this space. More coming...

Can I help?...

Yes, yes you can! JR costs a ton to run. We'd appreciate if you could make any small donation to us. We are thankful for a dollar, a euro or what ever currency you have. JR costs on estimate 2300 euro a year. And 5/6ths of that comes out of my pocket.
